Escape the winter blues and come get lost on Inspiration Island!

As promised, I'm here tonight to release the launch of my newest online class, Inspiration Island! I have had emails coming in every week asking for me to teach a new class and it feels great to have my plans being set into motion for this one! This art journal class is a spin-off of Ink Blots with more of what YOU want to see! In Inspiration Island, we will be delving even deeper into the world of art journaling, exploring different techniques/thoughts, and starting out 2012 on a good creative tangent. The class material is wildly inspired by incorporating art journaling into our everyday lives. Not only is there going to be sketching, there will be mixed-media prompts, projects, and guests artists galore!

This class is a BIT more expensive than my last, but the projects presented are more intensive and there is a wider range of mediums used! I am excited to be able to teach different lessons using sketching AND paper projects! Drawing inspiration from our current season, I know that this gathering of creative minds will give us all the boost we need!

Today I don't have to work until 4:30 which means that I am free to do whatever I want for approximately 4 more hours. I'm choosing to use those hours art journaling pages for my upcoming class. Yep. I've been inspiring lately amidst all the stupid financial trouble we're going through. So there's a HUGE mess in my living room right now of paper and stickers and scraps. It's WONDERFUL. I'm sorry I don't have a better post for you today. Maybe tomorrow?

Operation spruce up.

Christmas is over. The new year is here and we all know that once those 2 things pass, our eyes turn to anticipate spring. Stores are getting Valentine's Day merch out and some even have the first signs of florals for spring cleaning. I'm no exception to that rule and I desperately want to get our apartment in order and brighten it up to drown out the winter blues. The snow is getting ready to hit hard here in Indiana, and I'm bound & determined to have a warm inviting space!!! So my first order of business was doing something about our god-awful window dressing situation. Here's the embarrassing before shot:

BORING. Not to mention those curtains were a temporary fix. They are COMPLETELY the wrong length for that window! Wrong color, wrong size, wrong attitude in general. So i skipped to get some new fabric and I wanted something that would make a statement. When I was purchasing the material, there were some Amish ladies in line asking me what I was making with it. When I replied with curtains, I thought they were both going to have a heart attack. haha Here's how they turned out after some stitching:

We also got this new shelf with some money leftover from Christmas and I've been playing around with some different vignettes. I made that big Instagram art one night using postal wrap, a cheap poster frame, and tape. LOVE LOVE LOVE the way it turned out. This photo was my inspiration piece.

I just took some images from my Instagram, printed them from Photoshop in 4"x4" and adhered them to the postal wrap I cut to fit. Honestly I just kind of "eyeballed" the measurements for the photo grid, but if you're a better person than I, you COULD measure. But what's the fun in that? lol

The apartment is getting there: slowly but surely. I'm hoping we're going to be moving in the next few months, so I try not to do an permanent damage, but you have to make wherever you are your home. :)

Paint me a Memory

This is a little late, but this is a painting that i made for the birth of my friend's baby. They painted her nursery brown and pink and they wanted some art for the walls. So I just sat down with a blank canvas and started painting. I wanted something whimsical and cute with her name on it, and I came up with this elephant inspired by some scrapbook paper scraps I had lying around. I really like the way it turned out and it's just FULL of whimsy! Luckily, the parents of the new baby loved it too and she wants a few more smaller companion paintings to go with it. I love making paintings for gifts because they're one of a kind, affordable, and originally unique!

All I Want for Christmas

pink & green Christmas

Got about half of the Christmas gifts wrapped the other day since Ian and I had the day off together. LOVED wrapping presents, drinking cocoa, and spending time together!

This year, Ian and I chose some pretty pink paper with candies on it from Target and have paired it on gifts with Kraft wrap and vintage tinsel. :) The boy gifts are getting Kraft wrap, green brocade, and teal yarn. Oh-- and the toadstool stamp. :) Can't wait to get more boxes to finish wrapping the remainder of the presents!

I love this season.

DIY: Kitchen Backsplash

Since our move was temporarily put on hold, I have gotten a little restless with our apartment. I want change. I want more rooms. I want more storage space. I want changes in decoration. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and do some seriously apartment-changing projects. The first one I tackled was a DIY backsplash in our kitchen. I couldn't find a good "before" shot-- THAT'S how lame it was. I didn't even bother to photograph it before! Here's the only photo I have on hand of what the kitchen looked like without the backsplash, and it's from the first day we moved in! It's also a cell phone photo. :/

And after! Basically, I bought a piece of foam core board and cut it down to 2 strips that fit snug on my backsplash. Then I covered them in fabric (after ironing it) and hot glued it to the back. I'm classy like that. I added coordinating mod ribbon for effect. Then I just nestled them into the wall so they are snug between the cabinets and the countertop. No adhesive needed!

There was some debate that the foam might curl up or we might ruin the fabric from accidentally splashing dirty dishwater on it, but so far neither has happened. We've had the backsplash up for over a month now too. I love the pop of color you can see coming in my front door, and it temporarily curbed my appetite for change. This project cost me less than $10. Totally worth it!

Lately it has seemed like DIY has thrown up all over our house. But that's how we roll!

The Bee-Themed Wedding

Here's a mood board I made recently for a friend's wedding. One of Ian's groomsmen (Steve) and one of my college floormates (Season) are getting married!!!!! Their last name is (/will be) "Travelbee." Steve's family is obsessed with all things bee-related and I thought that would be an amazing thread for their wedding! I'm kind of a loser and tend to collect creative ideas for friends' future weddings. haha So I sent this off to Season like a creeper friend and she actually loved some of the images in it! I thought it would be fun to share on here since I love weddings. :) Enjoy!

One Year

Yesterday Ian & I celebrated our first anniversary! I really can't believe that a year passed already! It seems like not so long ago I was cutting out a million flowers for our napkin rings and making a million other wedding crafts. Truly, truly: it passed so fast! For anniversary gifts, Ian and I decided to start a tradition where each year we buy each other a book and write an inscription in the front cover. Someday when we're old and gray, we'll be surrounded with a library full of books with love letters to each other inside. :) We also will take a photo strip from a photobooth every year too. I'm starting a scrapbook JUST for those strips! I love traditions.

This past year we:

got married

moved into our first home together

graduated college from Ball State University

had our first holiday season as a married couple

adopted a fur baby

started paying off our student loan debt

became a great freelance photography team

~~finally~~ took our honeymoon

took the Wizarding world of Harry Potter by storm

saw lots of midnight premiers

got some good use out of our new video camera

did a LOT of thrifting

took a road trip to Ohio

went to as many festivals as possible

worked our way through EVERY season of EVERY tv on DVD collection we own. (and bought more)

had money issues

had money triumphs

had lots of tears but even more laughs

told pretentious inside jokes that no one else understands

spearheaded family photos with Ian's side of the family

started planning for when we have our OWN family

appreciated takeout more than ever before

realized that 80% of our money issues are because we love takeout TOO much

started new traditions

loved each other

finally realize what all those cheesy love clichés are about

became a love story.

So Happy Anniversary to my Ian: the greatest man I've ever known and my very best friend. One year down and a lifetime of forever to go. :)

remember that time?

Remember that time I didn't blog for a whole MONTH!? yeah... that time was the month of November. I've had some pretty serious stuff going on in my life recently, and blogging just didn't seem like the way to go. I had a lot of stuff to deal with in the ole noggin... and I'm sure I lost lots of readers during my off-time, which makes me sad. As important as my readers are to me, i know that they will understand the need to just step away and get some perspective. I really hate taking leaves of absence on here, but it was just something I needed to do for awhile to address some stuff in my own life.

The important point to all this is that I'm here now and despite the confusing and busy parts of reality, I'm going to try to get back in the groove. Lots to do, lots to share, especially for the upcoming holidays. :) I hope you all are well!

Home is Wherever I'm with You

Ian and I went to the prettiest and most magical little farm yesterday. It's called Stoneycreek Farm and Nursery. I had wanted to go pick pumpkins, but I wanted a real patch with gourds and possibly some cider for sale. Ian promised to find me a "full service pumpkin patch" with all the bells and whistles I required. :) That's my man.

They had the most darling things too. SERIOUSLY! I fell in love with that aqua farm truck and the pumpkin tree. I think we're going to make a pumpkin tree a tradition with our kids someday. :)

Ian bought us tickets to take a hay ride back to the patch to pick our own pumpkins. Their flat bed had the fluffiest hay and it was so much fun to be wearing cozy fall clothes and bumping along a muddy path to a fir tree and pumpkin patch. *Dream come true!*

I love coming home from work and seeing all the pretty colors on my porch. I couldn't resist another feet shot. (They're my favorite after all, but that's no secret!)

Thrill of the Thrift

Been thrifting lately and I've had some awesome finds!

Vintage tea towel in PERFECT condition! Look how pretty the colors are! Plus those lovely vintage Breyer horses that I love so much. (A new collection that's going to be the death of me I'm sure.) I also snagged a pretty old pincushion, some old vintage children's books, and a whole collection of swizzle sticks! They're from all different places around the world and all vintage! <3

I've got all sorts of things on my thrift list that I look for every time I go thrifting. I love the thrill of the hunt! My recent obsession has been dollhouses and antique ring boxes! What are things that you seek when you go to thrift stores?

On Coziness

Just as soon as I said I had a lot in store for you all on this blog, I got sick. GO FIGURE. I've been really sick for about a week and 1/2 and the rest of the time I have been majorly bogged down with work and photo editing. When I came home from work, I haven't felt like doing anything but taking my drowsy medicine and hitting the pillow. But I'm BACK! and that's the main thing here.

So today I'm sharing some recent snapshots of my home for falltime! I add and change things around almost every day, so I'm sure there will be more to come in the coming days. :) But for now, here are some corners of my home that I am in love with right now:

I found the perfect wreath at a craft store for our front door and I created a bow to hang from it and added a sparkly bird. :)

The embroidery piece you see is a recent thrift find that I'm SO proud of! I also threw in that awesome glittery skull from Target to add to the Halloween vibe for now. haha

As soon as I stacked up all my favorite quilts, Phoebe hopped up there as if to say "Oh thank you for making a THRONE for me! You shouldn't have!" *spoiled cat!*

These little houses were a vintage wedding gift from Ian's aunt. I love them SO much! They're technically a spice set, but I just like to set them out like a little neighborhood in my kitchen.

That plate is one of my prized possessions from Anthropologie.

Where have I been?

It's been a busy BUSY week! So many things happening in my life and so much to do! For starters, I'm being transferred for my job and that means Ian and I are going to be MOVING! To a bigger apartment no less! One with a STUDIO for me and more closet space and beautiful balcony. Ahhh. :) But this means lots of work packing, saving lots of money, and organizing like a mad woman. I've had a lot more on my plate lately too and blogging has fallen by the wayside, but TRUST me-- I can't wait to get back in the groove because there are some wonderfully inspiring things to share for fall on this blog. :) So what have I been up to this week?

Anderson Pow Wow

We hit up the Indian Pow Wow Festival in our town this past Saturday. It was SO cool! Tori and I were really hoping there would be lots of handmade booths and BOY, did they deliver! We saw tons of beautiful things including jewelry, buckets of pretty geodes, and native dresses! We wanted to buy everything in sight! But we sure did get a lot of cute ideas for future projects!

The festival also had live music, demonstrations, and people in native dress! The teepees were my favorite though. SO cool!

Tori and I barely have any good pictures together, so we take any chance we can get to slip in a photo. haha

I love the fall because there are all sorts of rummage sales, flea markets, farmers' markets, and festivals! :)

Home Front//Part 4

For the past week I've been doing lots of fun little projects to spice up our apartment for autumn! I re-did the display over our couch with some art and photos from our wedding.

The number 27 plates represent our wedding date. :) I got them at an antique market in our town and I just love how graphic they are, AND they have a beautiful meaning. Plus you'll see a few wedding photos, handmade art, a Kurt Halsey, and a silhouette print we got as a wedding gift! I love the way it looks together and its really pleasing when you walk in the front door.

Here's the new vignette on the top of our cubicle shelf. I added my new vintage Breyer horses, some new flowers, and other accessories to brighten it up.

I don't think I've ever showed a pic of our bathroom, but we got that shower curtain as a wedding gift and its been fun creating a friendly forest theme in there! I recently just added an adorable leaf garland for over our bathroom mirror. (A few days after I made it, Elsie posted this tutorial which is SCARY close! haha Great minds!)

I'll have a few more pretty things to share a little later this week, but I just wanted to pop in and show what I've been working on! :) I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and are looking forward to a creative and inspiring week ahead!

Mental Journal: september 11

On September 11, 2001, I was in my first hour class of 8th grade. I was on the television news team for our school, and we were filming that morning. My teacher flipped on the TV because we always watched the local news to gear up for our own newscast and I remember him just standing there staring and saying "Oh my God..." We were the first classroom in the school to realize what was happening and quickly word spread. The rest of the day was zombie-like: walking from class to class, teachers not really having lessons, sitting in a circle in homeroom discussing the events. There was a fire drill that day because someone panicked and pulled the alarm. When parents drove by and saw kids standing outside for the drill, they pulled in and were taking their children from the masses. It was chaos.

I remember watching the coverage, talking on the phone with my friend, and just thinking about all those passengers of those planes saying a prayer before crashing into that tower. I remember thinking about what it must have been like to be on that street in New York with all the people screaming. I remember the gas prices sky-rocketing and the mile-long lines at the pumps. I remember the weeks and weeks of news coverage of the aftermath. I remember my friend's dad being sent to Ground Zero because he was a firefighter and they needed more help. I remember hugging my parents a little tighter that day...

What have we learned since that day in 2001? That united, we are stronger. That we have something worth fighting for. That there is so much hate and anger in the world. That the power of prayer is indescribable. That we should ALWAYS say "I love you" before our loved ones go off to work or hang up the phone. That time is relative and lives are fragile.

Today I'm praying for kids going to school, just learning about the events of that day in history. I'm praying for the departments of firefighters and police men mourning the loss of their partners. I'm praying for the safety of our country on this vulnerable day. I'm praying for the families who miss their husbands and wives and parents and brothers and sisters... I'm praying for all of it. My heart is heavy today, but I know that everyday, we are stronger and that God has a plan for us as a nation.

Our lives are fragile, but our souls are strong.

DIY: Shimmer Spray

"DIY Shimmer Spray!?" you say? Yes! You heard correctly! I'm here to teach you how to concoct your very own homemade bottle of Shimmer Spray to use on your scrapbooks and art journals!

Supplies:
*metallic paint
*empty mini spray bottles
*a small funnel
*cardstock

And yes! I have created a VIDEO TUTORIAL for you!

Here are some closeups of the Shimmer Spray used with a handmade stencil. I used the negative space from a shape I cut out with my Cricut to create this African-looking stencil.

I'm sad that the photos don't do the shimmery paint justice, but it gives off a really nice iridescence, trust me!
And here is the layout I made with my Shimmer Spray and stencil!

P.S. I generally don't respond to negativity in the comment section, but I received a somewhat nasty comment regarding the nature of my post and me "taking credit" for the product "Glimmer Mist." I never meant to infringe on any copyright or suggest that I am the only one that has ever come up with a project such as this. I never meant to suggest that the spray I am making is superior to any other spray on the market. I just did it as a fun, money-saving project for art lovers. Frankly I think that its a matter of opinion whether this Shimmer Spray works any better than any other. Aside from playing vintage dress up this week, I've been busy making my apartment beautiful for fall time. I know, I know... I know what you're going to say: "But its not even fall yet!" True. Been CRAZY around here this week! The Christian Center acquired an estate of this community woman that died and in it was HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of vintage pieces! She was going to open a store, but died before she was able to accomplish it. That left me to the task of sorting through this massive amount of clothes to pick and choose pretties for the Red Door Vintage fall clothing line.

So with the help of Tori, I've spent the last 3 days submerging myself in vintage fashion! We have looked at probably close to 400 pieces one by one and hand picked the best ones to showcase in the fall line. (And we're only halfway done sorting!) Homage to Frida

Ian and I recently watched Frida, the biography film about Frida Kahlo (starring Salma Hayek). I have loved Frida Kahlo since high school and have always found her art eerily intriguing. Watching the film, I was blown away by the passion depicted by Hayek and the struggle and inner turmoil endured by Kahlo that I didn't even know about. The film showcased her extraordinary life and tortured art. When Ian and I went to the library yesterday, I decided to check out a HUGE art book on Frida and it has been SO inspiring! I made a painting inspired by Frida and her work yesterday too.

As some of you know, I majored in Spanish in college, so Mexican culture was a big part of my education and it continues to inspire my work, so it's no surprise that I love Frida Kahlo so much. This painting I made includes the bright colors that she was known for using, as well as other elements from her work: portrait interpretations, death, banners, and even a floral headpiece like she wore on a daily basis.

I based the painting around Día de Muertos, a mexican holiday festival in November celebrating deceased loved ones. Sugar skulls are one of the most prominent themes of Día de Muertos and are HUGELY inspiring me this fall!

I thought this little family portrait would be a cute fall gift for someone, even personalizing the banner too. I thought about sticking some listings for custom made ones in my etsy shop. What do you think?

It feels good to be painting again after a long reprieve and this week I'm going to continue doing more. I'm also going to be posting a feature post on Frida Kahlo and her work so I can share why she's so inspiring to me!

Picnic Kit for the Newlyweds

As you know, I've been posting about Allie's Wedding a lot lately (Sorry about that, but it was BEAUTIFUL!). And as you know, we're really good friends but live in different states. Therefore, I knew when I got the invitation to her bridal shower, that I wouldn't be able to make it. BUT! I still gave her the shower gift I made for her at her rehearsal. I worked really hard on this gift and I was super proud of it! I scoured thrift stores for a nice vintage picnic basket, and when I found one, my plan went into action.

One of my FAVORITE gifts I got as a wedding gift was a picnic kit from my mom and dad: vintage picnic basket, plastic plates, and my mom made me a beautiful quilt for a picnic blanket. :) I decided to do the same sort of thing for these pretty people.

I adhered some cute thick ribbon around the rim of the basket and then some coordinating tule underneath. Then I painted the top of the picnic basket by hand with their last name and flowers that match the ribbon. To seal the paint, I sprayed the top with an art sealing spray from a craft store. I then filled it with pretty floral dishes, a picnic cloth, and some flowers.

I think she really liked it! She seemed surprised and I hope they get some use out of it this fall! Maybe they'll go for a picnic at the Kingwood Center! I just love DIY gifts. :)

Choose Your Adventure

This Beautiful Girl

This beautiful girl is getting married tomorrow. She's about to marry the love of her life and I am BEYOND blessed to be the one to capture it forever.

I'm tearing up a little typing this post because Allie has been one of my BEST friends the past few years and I can't tell you how magical it is to be included in the most precious day of her life.

I know that she and Ben are going to have the most serendipitous adventure of their lives together and there couldn't be a more lucky guy than to have her on his arm for the rest of forever.

There are so many wonderful people here to support them and be witness to their marriage, that it just makes it the most perfect atmosphere for their wedding.

I love this girl and it's been such a blessing to be called her friend. I can't wait to look through my viewfinder tomorrow and see her dad walking her down the isle. <3 I love you Allie!

The Cat that Thinks She's a Dog

She's my favorite little fur baby: my cat Phoebe. I wanted to share a few funny things about her.

1. Ever since we got her, I've done what I call the "Lion King" where I grab her in one hand and hold her all the way over my head. She's always so passive when I do it and she just sits up there and looks around. I just image her saying "Man I can see everything from up here..."

2. She's always done this double meow thing where instead of just meowing once, she'll do 2 right in a row really fast. She does it a lot of times when she wants to say "Hey! Don't leave me out!" It's her attention meow. If Ian and I are cuddling on the couch, and we don't include her, she gets upset. We can't even TOUCH without her wanting in on it.

3. Phoebe won't TOUCH treats. I've tried so many types of cat treats for her and she won't have any of them. I've even tried to force her to eat one just to see if she TASTED it, maybe she would like it, but no. She WILL NOT do it. And if I mix them in with her food, she will pick them out and leave them in the bowl.

4. We'll buy her toys and she'd rather play with a milk ring, plastic bag, or crumpled up paper ball. We don't even waste our money any more. lol

5. When I'm in the shower, she'll climb between the shower curtain and the liner and I'll be able to see her silhouette. haha Then she'll lay on the bath mat outside the tub and keep me company until I get out.

6. She wakes us up at 6:30 AM EVERY DAY like clockwork. She's much like a baby. Ian and I will lay in bed sleepily arguing about who has to get up and feed her.

7. She LOVES Pop Rocks! We put a tiny dab on her tongue one time and she loved the popping sound and kept trying to eat the air. haha Any time we open a pack, she comes running for a taste.

9. We have lots of silly little names for her: Phoebs ("Feebs"), Phoebers ("Feebers"), Pretty Girl, Wittle Baby, Fur Baby, Kitty, etc etc.

10. She plays FETCH! I don't know HOW I taught her to do this, but I realized one day that I was playing fetch with her! I taught her to bring the paper ball back and drop it at my feet. Here's a funny video I made:

no one ever believed me because she won't do it with a lot of people around, so I filmed it and now there's proof. hahaha

She's the sweetest, but most WILD little kitty ever and I'm so glad that we chose her! She's my little fur baby and I love her so much. :) Do you have any fur babies in your life?

Pixie*Dust

I got my hair cut again. Since I started a new job (more on that later) I decided to get pretty. :) I went short...

Like... Emma Watson pixie post-Hermione short.

Truth: it wasn't what I asked for. I get my hair cut at the beauty school (They gotta practice on SOMEONE, right?) and she went a LITTLE too short.

But turns out I really like it! I never get upset about a wrong haircut because guess what....

IT GROWS BACK! I like the change!

And its nice and cool for the summer too.

So I'm off to get a Starbucks and then go to work!

So that's the progress of the album so far. It's coming along! The hardest pages are coming up: HOGWARTS. Its going to be SO hard to get all the photos and journaling crammed on to a reasonable amount of layouts. haha I think I'm also going to add a page toward the end of the book with a pocket for our receipts, rental car information, packing lists, and any other memorabilia leftover from the trip. (I save EVERYTHING on trips. haha)

A trip to Hogwarts

WARNING:
This post is very photo-heavy and wordy!!! I talk in detail about the aspects of the park, tips for vacationing there with families, etc., so just beware!!! haha

As you know, Ian and I went to Florida for our honeymoon and our main objective while we were there was to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I've been wanting to go SOOO bad since they created the place! It was pretty much the most magical place I've ever been too and I've waited FAR too long to share it all with you!

It was about $80 per person to get into Islands of Adventure which is actually decent considering all the things inside! You don't only get to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you buy a ticket to the Jurassic Park section, Lost City, Dr. Suess Land, a section all about cartoons, and Marvel Comic world. SO much to see! The food was VERY reasonably priced. Ian and I ate lunch for about $15 total and the HUGE bottles of water there were only $2.00. I thought that was great! You're also allowed to bring in backpacks or small coolers with drinks and snack foods, so if you have kids, that's a major plus!

In order to incorporate all of the wizard favorites, they modeled the section of the park after a snowy Hogsmeade Village, but included all the favorite shops from Diagon Alley at the approval of J.K. Rowling. When you walk into the section of the park, it is the WEIRDEST thing because everything looks genuinely snowy except it's 100º out! haha

All the shop fronts have moving elements to them. The music store has sheet music blowing around like a ghost is in there. Dogweed & Deathcap has a real working Mandrake crying in the window. Zonko's also has the funniest mechanical jokes in the window! Also, as expected, all the pictures move: the posters, the photos, the pictures on the books.

I loved all the realistic props they had. Whole store windows and ROOMS were filled with just... props. Memorabilia from the films/books, pieces that were obviously made just for the park. Seriously incredible! Some of my favorite prop pieces that I saw were: quidditch trunk/balls with real working bludgers, Gilderoy Lockhart's memoir, SO may quills, specialty wands in Ollivander's, I could go on and on.

The specialty stores like Honeydukes and Zonkos had the most amazing merchandise and decor. Honeydueks had all the authentic candies and treats from the book in branded packaging. It all looked so pretty and delicious! All the zonkos products were in vintage packaging and had little joke toys and magic tricks including PIGMY PUFFS!

At Islands of Adventure, there is one restaurant in each themed section of the park. The one in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the Three Broomsticks (run by Madame Rosmerta). They have whole authentic meals. Very medieval. Very cool.

Then there's the castle: Hogwarts castle was COLOSSAL! They did SUCH an amazing job replicating it!!! The castle itself is actually a ride. (An AMAZING ride that combines robotics, roller coasters, and simulators!!!) You have to walk through the castle to get to the front of the ride, and it serves as the "line" on busy days where there are hundreds of people in line.

They had everything right down to the Pensieve in Dumbledore's office! They had holograms of characters that looked SO real I felt like I could reach out and touch them. All the portraits talked to each other, the Herbology Greenhouses were spetacular, and all the artwork and architecture made me feel like I was there. FOR REAL. I could talk about it for days.

For souvenirs, Ian and I went a little crazy. haha We saved most of our souvenir money for the park, so we spent kind of a lot. The merchandise ranged from VERY expensive to incredibly reasonable!!! I got this Azkaban shirt, the Time Turner Keychain (that I turned into a pendant), the Skele-Grow Keychain, a Ravenclaw pin, and MY WANDDDDD!

Here's a shot my hubster took in our hotel room of our wand boxes and some Honeydukes treats we bought! (acid pop and sugar quill!)

Little Ian

I've been collecting photos of Ian's childhood from my mother-in-law so that I can start working on his scrapbook. No one ever made his album for him, so as his wife, I figure it's my job now. haha I have found some of the CUTEST pictures of him that I could just die! I thought I would share some for your enjoyment and his embarrassment! :)

Don't you like the one with the big headphones? I have a photo of myself JUST like that from when I was a baby! What a cute layout that will make! :) Plus the picture of him dressed as a Ghostbuster for Halloween has my heart. His little nerd glasses make me melt! I hope our little ones are as cute as he was at that age!

The Time Elaine Stood Up For Herself

Disclaimer: the girl in the photos with me is NOT my manager. She's my friend and previous co-worker that I LOVE! So yeah.... not my boss.

I mentioned in a previous post that I had some not-so-light hearted things to say. Basically in a nutshell, I told my boss to shove it a few weeks ago. After working at Claire's for a year as Assistant Manager and being mistreated by my boss, I finally had enough.

I approached my boss about a situation that had occurred at work (a situation in which she talked down to me in front of the other associates and made me look bad intentionally). She apparently had an "open door policy" which means she's always open to talk about anything that might be bothering you at work, etc. So after she had put off talking to me for 5 days for various reasons,I approached her in a mature way after work when the store was closed. I told her how I felt about the situation and she took it as a personal attack on her management style and flew off the handle. She kept telling me she didn't want to talk about it and didn't want to have the conversation and I started to get heated. If you claim to have an "open door policy," then you have to be willing to TALK to your EMPLOYEES no matter what it is they want to say. So I started to get infuriated, she kept telling me to leave and eventually YELLED: "GO HOME. WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS NOW. GO. HOME!" It ended in an ugly argument.

I stormed out of the store, went outside, and cried on the curb. I was crying because I was SO mad, embarrassed at my behavior, and because I didn't have anyone to talk to about it. Ian was at work, my Mom was on a quilting retreat, and my sister was out of town. So I called my dad. And... he gave me dad advice:

"You are an adult now. From now on for the REST of your life, you are an ADULT. You swallow your pride, and march your a** back in there and apologize, young lady! You have BILLS to pay!"

It was good advice. a) Because I probably wouldn't have been able to sleep that night knowing that I hadn't apologized, b) Because he was right-- i AM an adult. And respectable adults don't argue with their bosses, and c) Because it was the Christian thing to do. The hardest thing and the right thing are almost ALWAYS the same. So I went back in and apologized. Did I mean it? ...not completely. I was sorry that I hurt her feelings as a person, but I don't regret saying it because i had been provoked to that point & was standing up for myself. She had ignored me as a part of the management team and purposefully treated me like a child. SO basically, my boss didn't want to hear any of the apology. Which I knew would happen because that's the kind of person she is. I wasn't trying to erase what I said, I just wanted to let the record show that I did the hard thing and the bigger person thing and apologized. She reported it to Human Resources, and I was fired a week later. I've never been fired from anything before, but it comforts me to know that it wasn't entirely my fault and that I will be out of the poisonous situation now. Lesson learned: Poor Communication=Unhappy Workers

I've been enjoying my time at home. They called me over my vacation and let me know I was canned, so I've still been pretending like I'm still on vacation just with some job applications worked in. I actually got a call today for an interview on Monday at Bath & Body Works, so we'll see what happens with that. The bottom line is that my life is SO much less stressful without that job. I'm not walking on eggshells all the time, I'm not pulling my hair out... yeah. She was just an IMPOSSIBLE person to work for. I loved the job, LOVED working for the company because they do so many wonderful things for their employees, but I just couldn't take the crap from her any longer.

Truth: I don't want to work in retail forever! I want to get out and begin my life as an artist! I want to take my photography and art full time and ditch the mall jobs. When will my life choices iron themselves out and get me to a point where I can be the person I want to be without corporate stuff getting in the way? I know it will happen. God has a plan, but.... patience is NOT my strong suit.

So anyway, this was long and boring, but I wanted to explain my situation and just say how much I loved the job itself, just not the manager. But things are looking up and I'm excited to see what God has in store for this marked chapter in my life!

Mix & Match

After taking a trip to Anthropologie the other day, I was on the website and found something that occupied my attention for quite awhile. I'm sure I'm the last to know about this, but it was so much fun, I had to share! It's the Mix & Match Bedding page on their housewares range! You can scroll through the different comforters and sheet sets that they have and create your own pretty pairings. Here's some of the ones I created:

Although I'm in no position to afford any linens from Anthro, I still thought this was a magical way to get ideas. It shows you the crazy color combinations that actually look really wonderful together!

They also have a section where you can choose different pieces of furniture and try on their collection of pretty knobs and drawer pulls! How cute!

Week in the Life // Wednesday

Woke up at 11:00. I know-- seriously! I was tired from staying up until 4 the night before. Checked emails and Google Reader on the couch. Cap'n Crunch for breakfast. Made a cleaning list for the boy and I. Started deep cleaning the house even though it was a million degrees. Ian did dishes and folded some laundry. I swept, dusted, and generally put things away. Talked to my mom on the phone for a bit. Resisted the urge to take a nap even though I had only been awake for a few hours. Got dressed. Ran some errands in town: took back movie rentals, stopped by Ian's parents to feed the pets since we're house-sitting, paid the car insurance. Left for Indianapolis to pick up a wedding gift for Allie. Grabbed some Burger King on the way. While we were in Indy, stopped off at the mall and went into Anthro. About died over all the wonderful things in there. Made a quick stop at Michael's to spend a gift card and grab some supplies for a home decor project. Got home and started a painting while Ian made pasta for dinner. Watched Finding Neverland and The Rocker. (silly) Turned in early at about 1.

Week in the Life // Tuesday

I've been doing Ali Edward's Week in the Life 2011 and I've been enjoying it SO much! I had every intention of sharing my photos every day, but life got in the way and that's OK! :) So I'm going to share each day's photos in a different post. I think I"ll do what Elise is doing and put a little description of my day at the bottom. Better late than never, right? Also, I got started a day late because I had some major stuff happen on Monday, so I'm going until Saturday!

Woke up around 10:30. Checked the internet on the couch. Slice of homemade bread and butter for breakfast. Started right in on job applications. Got 2 of them filled out in an hour or so while batting Phoebe away the whole time. Watched LOST with Ian for awhile. Got through about 2 episodes before he had to get ready for work. Hopped in the shower. Said goodbye to him before his 5 hour shift. Got dressed for real this time. Tidied up a bit. Took inventory of the household products and made a grocery list. Took measurements of our hall cabinets to get organization totes for. A friend from work stopped by to give me back my house key since she was our weekend "cat-sitter." Left for town. Dropped off an application at Bath & Body Works. Returned my work keys to Claire's. (That was awkward.) Went to Target for grocery shopping. Came home and put away the groceries. Filed all the random papers laying around the house and tossed junk mail. Caught up on some YouTube video subscriptions. Started dinner (pizza!) while waiting on Ian to get home. Stay*cation

Starting today I have 9 days off of work. Which couldn't have come at a more perfect time because there have been some (*hem hem*) ~~blow ups~~ issues with my job lately. So I have 9 days payed vacation comin' MY way.

What shall I DO with my vacation!?

Everyone write something for me to do (REASONABLY) on my vacation this week in the comments. I'm going to randomly choose a comment and whatever it says, I'm going to try to do that activity this week! It has to be something that I can realistically accomplish and doesn't cost a huge amount of money. Just something fun and creative to do on my vacation!

Here are some things that I plan to do already:

*make frequent trips to Starbucks
*go home to see my familia
*do many crafty things
*finish my book
*go to the pool
*blog about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
*a few photo sessions for clients
*try and find a pretty ttv application or template online

Handmade by Mom: Fashion Edition

I'm here sharing a fashion post tonight! This is a super special one too because my mom made me this gorgeous tunic inspired by this gorgeous piece by Elise Blaha. I saw the dress back when she first posted it and knew that I wanted to recreate it with my own twist somehow. While I'm fairly adequate at sewing my own clothes, my Mom has been sewing for 40 years and is MUCH faster. haha She whipped out this stunning tunic for me in about 3 hours.

I just want to show you all that this is what has become of my life lately:

explosions of craft, project, and scrap remnants on top of to-do lists. So if I haven't been posting much in the past week, that would be why. I made the post-it wall that you see because I need to PHYSICALLY SEE my to-do list shrinking as I complete things. When I get something done, I pull the note off the wall and I can see the grid disintegrating. I have a lot to do even before the weekend, so today is my "GET-IT-DONE-OR-ELSE" day before I work at 5:00.

Things to complete before work today:

*a few layout samples for the class
*edit AT LEAST 15 pics for photo client wedding
*return messages to other photo clients
*start packing for weekend trip home
*posts on each blog
*take out trash and boxes
*tidy up bedroom
*stick camera on charger
*put away all folded clothes on bed

So for my next trick, I will attempt to make this list disappear!

Class Q and A

Many of you have been craving more details of the super sweet Paper Popsicles class coming up. Well I'm here to answer some questions, divulge some details, and put rumors to rest.

Q: Why is the price so much higher for the new class than Ink Blots?

A: Ink Blots was my first class and I didn't really know what I was doing. I am now more equipped on how to host and conduct an online class! This means that it's going to run more smoothly. Also, Paper Popsicles is more intensive than Ink Blots including MORE assignments, challenges, and prompts. There is also new mediums thrown into the mix which make it fresh, exciting, and inspiring, but also more time consuming.

Q: Will the prompts be different than those seen in Ink Blots?

A: OF COURSE! I wouldn't charge you twice for the same prompts! All prompts and topics discussed in Paper Popsicles will be completely new. The class setup will be similar (ie: lessons and assignments each day, etc.) but the ideas presented are all new.

Q: What makes Paper Popsicles different than other art journal classes I've taken?

A: First of all, most classes have 1 post per day whereas my classes have 2: a lesson post and an assignment post. Your assignment post might even include extra prompts some days. Also, I offer free downloads and giveaways throughout the 3 weeks. And lastly, since I'm not as big of a name in the blogging world, I have more time and smaller class sizes that contribute to better and more frequent communication!

Q: How long will I have access to the class blog?

A: At least one year. I will leave the private blog up so that you can work at your own pace!

To that end, if I don't have a certain number of students enrolled by July 15, the class start date will be postponed to August 1. I want to have a "classroom community" so that each student gets the most out of the class and doesn't feel alone out there.

Craftcake Design Re-Brand

I've been meaning to write this post for so long, but I was waiting to get my etsy update under way. Since I've been so busy and the update just isn't happening for me right now, I thought I could still rave about my new commissioned re-brand for the shop by Alexandra Rae Design.

Allie Bandy (soon-to-be Allie Trumpower) is owner and operator of Alexandra Rae Design. and Yellow Paper Friday, an awesome personal design business, and there couldn't be a more spirited person behind the genius!

I knew I wanted a complete re-brand which involves SO much change, designing, and WORK. I just didn't have the time and I wanted it done right away, so I opted for the Alexandra Rae Design re-brand package. I contacted Allie, we discussed design, theme, palette, and feel. She ended up emailing me proofs and rough drafts and I loved everything she sent!

I told Allie I wanted something pretty, simple, and earthy, involving a feather design. I gave a few color palette visions I had in mind and she really delivered! The package I chose included a custom logo, etsy banner, avatar image, side bar button, and a multi purpose image to use for packaging, labels, etc. Overall, the design package included everything I needed to re-brand and all I had to do was upload! Announcing Paper Popsicles Online Class!

I'm here FINALLY releasing my newest magical online class, Paper Popsicles! This art journal class is a spin-off of Ink Blots with more of what YOU want to see! Paper Popsicles will be choc-full of pretty drawing prompts but also combined with art journaling topics, ideas, and projects. Summer is the perfect time to celebrate our art in a free form that we can look back on for ages! Also, Paper Popsicles strikes a nice balance between 2 fantastic mediums of portable art: sketching and art journaling!

This class is a BIT more expensive than my last, but the projects presented are more intensive and there is a wider range of mediums used! I am excited to be able to teach different lessons using sketching AND paper projects! Morning Hello

Good morning blogland! Thought I would pop in and say hello before I got ready for work. Today is one of those days where I just don't want to go because I have so many ideas swirling around in my head that I want to make happen! I have projects I want to work on, art journal pages I want to make, and I'm almost ready to post the call-out for my new online class Paper Popsicles! I just want to stay at home in my pajamas all day and work. <3

WORST. DAY.

I wish I were back here:

I took that on my honeymoon. Somehow, I don't think I would have a day like THIS in paradise:

I went to leave for my dance recital dress rehearsal, and my car wouldn't start.
I finally got it started but I knew I would be late for dress rehearsal.
So I called my instructor and told her I would be late, but that I would be there as soon as I could.
I got halfway there and my gas light comes on. GO FIGURE.
I did NOT want to stop for gas because I was wearing my scandalous and ridiculous dance costume.
When I went to prepay for my fuel, I realized I only had the money from Ian's mom to buy their recital tickets plus $5.00.
So I got a WHOLE $5.00 of gasoline, which was stupid on top of the fact that I was in that costume.
I pumped my gas and then.... realized I locked my keys in my car. TRUE STORY.
So by this point, I start crying from frustration and humiliation.
A lady let me borrow her phone and I finally got a hold of a Wrecking service with lock entry.
1/2 hour later, they came to unlock my car while the whole time I've been standing by my car in this outfit looking like a hooker.
Then I realized I had to pay the guy with the money for my mother-in-law's recital tickets.
I drive to town where my recital was and find out that I can't even GET to the auditorium because there's so much construction.
There wasn't even a detour sign.
So I had to drive ALL THE WAY across town just to get around the construction which was RIGHT by the auditorium.
I find out that I can't park for free near the auditorium so I drive to the nearest parking garage (not that near).
There were NO SPACES available until I got to the VERY top floor of the garage (which has no elevator).
I walk all the way to the auditorium, across campus, in my ridiculous prostitute worthy costume and I'm pretty out of breath.
I finally reach the entrance (an HOUR late to my dress rehearsal) and there's a sign that says to enter through the eat entrance.
WHICH IS ALL THE WAY AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING WHICH I JUST CAME FROM.
I finally get into the rehearsal and am throwing on the accessories to my costume AS I'm walking on stage for us to perform.

This was my day. And it continued on like that.
But luckily I have the best husband ever would made a delicious dinner and still loves me even when I cry and wear my sweatpants. :)

I love my Dad

Just wanted to pop in and say Happy Father's Day to the greatest dad a girl could ever ask for. :)

Here are some of my favorite memories with my Dad growing up:

cuddling on the couch when I was little
going to the jail where he worked and him showing us cool stuff
when he called me "Newt"
the Snoopy Dance
the little plastic pink Indiana Beach wallet he bought me and i thought was so cool.
learning to fish
Daddy-Daughter dances at school
him coming home from clown school with different things to show us each day
lasso-ing him in the front yard
all of his police maneuvers he would show us
going to the jewelry store to buy Mom that pearl ring for Christmas
him getting us army flashlights for Christmas like Harriet the Spy had
learning to use a pocket knife and a compass
long hiking trips, especially those with scavenger hunts involved
taking Julie (our dog) in the woods to go tracking
going out at night hunting for nightcrawlers
playing in the field near our old house: flying kites, playing softball, etc.
him taking us to Voight Park to play softball
just... everything. He was an awesome dad for 2 girls. :)

Smash* Mash-Up

I'm sure by now, everyone has seen the Smash Journal from K&Co! They're seriously the most amazing looking books ever. I have been loving it for awhile, but then when Allie posted about it, I saw it as a sign. haha

The premise of the Smash book is just to basically cut out and paste in anything and everything that you feel inspired by. Treat it as a sort of "catch-all" for all the random clippings that accumulate in drawers, tabletops, etc. Well I've really been wanting to buy the Smash Journal, but I know that's its really nothing more than a big blank book with a glue stick and pen. I probably WILL buy it someday, but being broke as I am right now, I decided to create my own Smash Journal inspired book! So... I created the Summer Book.

Products used on cover: Paper: Paper Studio (kraft) Stickers: American Crafts Thickers (dolce, text), Paper Studio (foil numbers), Basic Grey (chipboard sticker) Embellishments: washi tapes, paint chip

To create the book, I used some mat board that I had laying around to create the covers. I covered the mat board with kraft paper, decorated it, then used my Bind-it-All to create the spiral binding.

I've been having SO much inspiring fun pasting in all my favorite clippings. It's like a real live Pinterest! I love opening the Summer Book because it's like a picture book all about me. :) I have actually been using this idea book process for years. Here's some of the pages from my first idea snippet book I created in 2008:

I will actually be using a book like this as part of my new upcoming journal class Paper Popsicles!

I caught the Scrapbook Bug

It started with watching scrap room tours on youtube. Then it went to organizing my supplies. Then it went to starting a mini book. And now I can't stop. It's been SO long since I scrapped and it feels SO good to get some stuff DONE! I'm here to share a mini book I made for Allie! I started this puppy FOREVER ago and with the wedding and graduation and vacation, there's been no time. But here it is! Allie, I'm sorry this is going to ruin the surprise, but I couldn't wait any longer to post it! :)

I whipped that sucker out in a day! I'm proud of how it turned out and I hope that Allie can use it to put out at a bridal shower or something since it's all about her and her hubby-to-be!

Project Doodle!

Hi pretty people! Broadcasting from back in my little town in Indiana. Although it’s wonderful to be back in my own little house with my kitty and all my craft supplies, I know next week I’ll want to go back to the island. It was SO fantastic to just be able to trek around the island seeing all the pretty candy color beach houses and eat at the local cafes and not have to go to work! We had so many delicious ice cream cones from hometown places in Anna Maria and Sarasota too!

So to kick off me being back on Hoosier soil, I’m going to tell you all about something awesome happening around the blogosphere! Allie from Alexandra Rae Design is holding a FREE class on bring out your inner doodles!

I happen to be a contributor of this project and I’m going to be so proud posting my doodle pages in the flickr group every day! You can all participate for FREE! honeymooners

We've been out and about on our honeymoon this weekend! We flew into Tampa Bay yesterday afternoon and drove to Anna Maria Island in Florida to spend the week! So far we've been doing a lot of sight-seeing, playing in the Gulf, and sampling local restaurants! Just wanted to pop my head in and say hello!

Tomorrow we're going to the local Aquarium and then snorkeling on the island! Hoping to find some treasures to share!

New adventure in Literature

Hey pretties! I wanted to introduce to you my new blog: Between the Covers! It's NOT a replacement blog for this one or a continuation of any kind! It's a completely separate blog all about reading! I'm an avid reader that devours books on a weekly basis, and since I've got so much free time from school and wedding, I've become utterly obsessed! To feed this obsession, I started a book blog for all of you readers to follow and comment on!

Kindle Kontents: May

I'm back with another Kindle Kontents post!

1. Critical Care by Theresa Brown was one of the most raw and honest things I've ever read. It really made me appreciate the job that they do and it proves that it takes a truly special person to do that job. Through the tales that she tells in the book, you get a very raw introduction to Theresa's nurturing personality and brave take on healthcare. The story is refreshingly candid and truthful when presenting all things that go on inside a hospital. Overall, the book tugged on my heartstrings while still being educational and tactfully truthful.

2. The book I'm currently reading now is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Many people read this as a required book for high school, but since I was in the Honors program, it wasn't required for me. I decided that I should read it since so many people find it a good and interesting read. I'm not very far into it at all, but so far it seems very strange. I'll keep you posted because it should be a very quick read.

3. Next up on the reading docket is House Rules by Jodi Picoult! I love love love her books. Always have. I own pretty much all of them! My Mom got this book for me as a gift last summer and I still haven't read it. It centers around a boy with Autism that the community believes may have committed a murder. She always reels me in. ;)

To top off this little post, I thought I would do something a little different. I know a lot of you are readers, so I did a tour of my bookshelf and did mini reviews on a few of them inside. It's a little unconventional, but fun! Give it a watch if you want! (The camera is a little shaky because its my first time using our new video camera. Sorry about that!)

Project Restyle #1: pleated skirt

I did this project for Project Restyle FOREVER ago and am just now getting around to posting it!

I found this hideously cute vintage skirt at a thrift store and was in love with the pattern, but not with the skirt style. This is probably one of the easiest Project Restyle projects ever, but its still cute anyway! All I really did was hem the skirt considerably and turn it into a high-waisted piece. I really like the after effect and its perfect to add to my wardrobe for spring and summer! Plus its vintage so it gets an A in my book!

Which brings me to the conclusion that I really miss working at the thrift store like I did 2 summers ago. I added SOOO much to my closet for SO cheap! I miss those days!

Sweet Tomato Paint

My day started out like this:

I decided that I didn't like my old setup of my weenie little inspiration wire and needed something meatier for summer inspiration. Something strong, bold, and...well... inspiring! I've been snipping things from magazines and pinning things on pinterest like a mad woman and it was out of control!

The new board gives me much more room to spread out and create mood boards and cute collages for guests to see when they come in the door.

Basically I went to Hobby Lobby and bought one of their 36"x25" cork boards without a frame (used a coupon on it too! Score!) and spray painted it a color called "Sweet Tomato" to match this quilt (horrible picture I know). Then I pulled out my little pink hot glue gun and covered the edges with coordinating ribbon wrapping it around the sides. That's literally it.

This entire project cost me $20. I consider that a creative success.

By the way, I recently started that devotions book, New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. It's too soon to form a definite opinion, but it's been very positive and uplifting so far! I can tell you that I would recommend! I'm always loving good devotions books!

Today's devotion was about not letting Satan tell you you're worthless. Even if we aren't all that self confident, we don't have to be because we have confidence through Christ. "I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me." -Phillippians 4:13 God is so good!

I have caught the tribal bug. I'm seriously in love with the African fashion trend for this summer. Inspiring, colorful, and flattering, I just want to be bold and wear all the tribal duds I can get my hands on. Swept*Away

I'm loving the weather today! SO warm and I have all the doors and windows open! Plus someone down the way is mowing and I'm loving the sounds and sights and smells that are coming with this warm weather! To celebrate, I'm making a packing list for my honeymoon which is coming up in 2 weeks! Eeeeek! At the time that we got married, we were also trying to graduate college, so a honeymoon was out of the question. But now that we have time and a little money, we're heading to Anna Maria Island off the coast of Tampa, FL. I'm also shooting a wedding on the island while we're there, so it's going to be 2-in-1. haha

Here are some pretty things I want for my honeymoon! I'd probably buy them all if I had a million dollars!

Also!!! I went and got a PERFECT (albeit expensive) haircut today and had some feather extensions added in!

Inspired by Water for Elephants

The other day on my day off, Ian took me on a special day out to a nearby city where we went out to lunch, shopping, and then to a movie: Water for Elephants. I read the book last summer and LOVED it! It's a very polarizing book: you either love it or you hate it. The book got passed to me because the 2 people before me hated it. I HIGHLY recommend that you read it! So naturally, since I loved the book, I wanted to see the movie and compare.

The movie TOTALLY exceeded my expectations! It was wonderful and SO inspiring in many different ways! The fashion that Reese Witherspoon wears was enough to make me swoon. Plus the adventure of running away with the circus is always mesmerizing. The 1930s is one of my very favorite decades and I think it often gets overlooked, but the depression was a true test of character and this circus was right in the thick of it. The movie will be ranked among my very favorites and I recommend 100 times over. :) Here are some pretty inspiring elephant images to celebrate!

Kindle Kontents: April

1. I started reading the first book in the Mediator Series by Meg Cabot: Shadowland. It's pretty good so far! It's a very easy read and I'm enjoying it for that face value. haha I need something brainless right now after the heavy stuff I read last month. It's about a girl that can communicate with the dead and it makes her life really hard. I think there might be a love story attached too between her and a ghost, but I haven't read far enough to tell. haha

2. I finished The Hunger Games in a day and it was fantastic! A few of my friends (including Allie) have been raving about the series by Suzanne Collins and they weren't kidding! I've had the book hiding on my shelf since November and just hadn't gotten around to reading it. I hope the whole trilogy is as good as the first book!

3. Which leads me to Catching Fire! This is the second book of the Hunger Games trilogy and I'm STOKED to keep reading! I know I'll get a lot done on our car ride to Monticello tomorrow and I'm eager to see what unfolds in this one. If you haven't already, you've GOT to check out the plot summary at the bottom of this page! It's gripping!

I heart reading SOOOOO much and I love when I'm just surrounded by books upon books for the taking. PLUSS I FINALLY got my library card for our county today! I've been meaning to since I got my name changed, but it's been craziness. So now I have a whole library in front of me! *love* You should go check out the amazing list that Janel has read this past year! It's incredible! I wish I had a list that long to show off! haha I love reading SO much!

Ink Blots Top 10

I decided to do another little post about Ink Blots, my new online class! Mainly I'm writing this post because I've gotten emails and requests from people wondering more about the class. They want more details, more excitement, and more of an inside scoop into what the workshop will have in store. They want to know EXACTLY why this class is AMAZING. I will tell you.

1. It's cheap! It really is! You can't beat $12.00. That's $4.00 a week and about $.53 per day! <3

DIY: Kitschy Kite Magnets

I haven't done a tutorial in SO long so I decided to get creative. As most of you know, I've been going through a creative slump due to changing medications and what not, but I'm starting to get back in the groove!

Since I'm OBSESSED with decorating every INCH of my home, this project stemmed from needing something cute for our fridge. I've been really inspired by kites lately for springtime, so I thought that some handmade kite magnets would be something really cute I could do to get back into gear! Let's get started!

Supplies:

If you're an avid crafter or artist, you might have much of this stuff around the house so this project is super cheap!

*a few colors of Polymer Clay (Sculpey)
*pasta maker or rolling pin
*cutting board
*blade
*stylus
*yarn
*scissors
*magnets
*aluminum foil
*cookie sheet
*super glue
*oven
*ribbon scraps

Step 1:
PREHEAT YOUR OVER TO 275ºF in order for your clay to bake.

Step 2:

Start by breaking off a small amount of clay from each of your colors and rolling them in a ball to soften them. Then stick each of them into your pasta maker one at a time to make a sheet (my pasta maker was on the #4 setting). You can also use a rolling pin for this step. You want your kite to be a good thickness so it doesn't break easily, but not too thick that your magnet can't hold it up!

Step 3:

Using your blade or knife, cut your sheet of one color clay into a diamond. You can also lightly cross hatch your diamond from point to point vertically and horizontally so that you can see the kite design taking shape.

Step 4:

Now it's time to decorate your kite with your complementing colors of clay however you like! You can use textured items or rubber stamps to make designs in the clay, cut out shapes to attach to your kite or just decorate each kite quadrant with your stylus.

I chose to make a grid on opposite quadrants and then outline the other 2 with different clay colors. Making the quadrants complementary and visually exciting will make for a better impact on your kites!

Step 5:

Next, line a cookie sheet with wax paper or aluminum foil and carefully place your kites onto the cookie sheet. Bake the clay at 275ºF for approximately 5-7 minutes. (For every 1/4 of an inch of clay, you bake it for 16 minutes, but since ours is very thin, you can use less time)

After your clay is done baking, let sit for about a minute, then run each piece under cold water to harden.

Step 6:

Cut a small length of yarn and use super glue to adhere to the back of the kite to make the tail. You can tie little ribbons on the tail to make cute bows for your mini kites!

Also, super glue your magnets to the back of the kites. (Hint: at Hobby Lobby, you can buy the raw magnets in different strengths. I bought mine in strength level 6 because I wanted them to be able to hold thick postcards!)

And you're done!

I love the way they look like they're flying around in the spring air on my refrigerator! They brighten up the kitchen so much and just make everything look a little more cheery. If you don't have access to polymer clay or aren't interested in getting any, you can always substitute felt plastic canvas, or simply card stock for this project! I thought that clay would make it a little more 3D and lively, but there are so many products out there! Experiment and fly your own kite!

Confession: my lipsticks are like my children. HA! Ok not really, but I love them. haha I started collecting them last summer and slowly became obsessed. I have a shade for every mood and each one shows a different side of me! I know that lots of girls my age don't like wearing lipstick because they think it looks frumpy and dated, but... it's actually sassy and lets you rock the diva. ;)

Motivation-y

Tomorrow's a new day. I go through these reinvention spurts where I want to wake up the next day with a clean slate and just... forgive myself for a crappy week and start over. My boss is on my case at work, I spent too much money yesterday, and I'm just generally bored with everything right now. I need to wake up tomorrow with a renewed sense of zest and ready to fend off haters. Sometimes during weeks like this it seems like even my best isn't bold enough, my cheer isn't happy enough and my motivation isn't... motivation-y enough.

Even though it's 12:30 AM, I think I might tidy up my house real quick that way when I wake up in the morning, I'll have a clean house and I'll be ready to tackle my awesome life as it comes. :) Maybe I'll clean out my purse too.... and pick out my outfit for tomorrow... lol I better go. I have a lot cut out for me before bed!
